Physicians for Social Responsibility - San Francisco

Mission

GUIDED BY THE EXPERTISE OF MEDICINE AND PUBLIC HEALTH

SF Bay Physicians for Social Responsibility works to protect human life from the gravest threats to health and survival. Consequently, we promote public policies that protect human health from the threats of nuclear war and other weapons of mass destruction, global environmental degradation, climate change, the epidemic of gun violence, and other social injustices in our society today.

History

FOUNDED IN 1979

San Francisco Bay Physicians for Social Responsibility (SF Bay PSR), founded in 1979, is a nonprofit education and advocacy organization that combines the power of community activism with the knowledge and credibility of health professionals to promote public policies that support human and environmental health. Our work is anchored in our central concerns for racial, social, and environmental justice.

Our chapter was originally founded to organize physician and other health professionals to advocate for the end of the nuclear arms race and the abolition of nuclear weapons. In the early 1990s, we broadened our mission to include the existential threats posed by our looming climate crisis and related toxic degradation of our web of life.

SF Bay PSR was the first PSR chapter to be organized in the U.S. and it remains one of the largest of the 24 U.S. PSR chapters. Please explore Our Work for more information about our programs and to learn how to become actively engaged in our chapter activities. We invite you to become part of the change needed to survive and thrive as a species in harmony with our planet.
